In the early morning hours of Sunday, 20 September 2020, a special airplane took off from Ljubljana Airport towards Paris with 174 passengers on board. Slovenian sports aficionados, especially cycling fans, headed to Paris’ Champs-Elysées to take part in the spectacle of the champions’ parade – the finish of the 107th iteration of the bicycle race around France, the Tour de France – and, most importantly, to honour Slovenia’s cycling heroes, led by Tadej Pogačar, the overall winner of the Tour, and Primož Roglič, who finished second.
The 174 seats on the airplane chartered from Croatia Airlines were more or less sold out in only 24 hours. Also travelling with us was the family (parents and sister) of the champion Tadej Pogačar. We initially planned to organise trips to watch the race around France throughout the three weeks of its duration, but it turned out to be impossible unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The organisation of such events proves time and again the fact that the attendance of sporting events is always a great opportunity for a company to show it is able to organise and simply be present at these special occasions, thereby confirming the trust of the customer base of the tourism sector, not only in the field of ‘sports tourism’ but consequently in all other segments. Sports are truly something that inspires and connects us.
